Questions tree service owners ask about marketing
Direct answers on reviews, Google Ads, storm work, estimates, websites, the benchmark dataset and the free 14-day trial, written for tree company owners.
How many Google reviews does a tree service need?
Enough to beat the two companies you appear beside. Across 87,219 tree service listings the median is 17 reviews and 39.1% sit under 10. In a real metro the companies holding the map pack are usually past 100, and only 18.1% of tree companies have crossed that line. Because your jobs are large and infrequent, one review per completed removal is a realistic pace and it compounds faster than owners expect. Scripts are in the reviews guide.
Should I run ads for storm work or for planned trimming?
Both, in separate campaigns with separate budgets. Emergency removal searches spike for 48 hours and will drain a shared budget before noon, leaving your pruning and stump grinding keywords with no impressions for the rest of the month. Split them, cap the emergency campaign, and let the trimming campaign run steady. The Google Ads guide has the structure and the negative keyword list.
What does a tree service lead cost on Google Ads?
In most US metros a call costs $30 to $95 for trimming and pruning work and $45 to $160 for removal, with emergency and storm terms running higher in large markets. Those numbers only make sense against a job that averages $800 to $5,000. A $120 lead on a $2,400 removal at a 40% close rate is good business. The same $120 lead on a $250 stump grind is not.
Does ISA certification actually help me sell?
Yes, but only if you put it where a homeowner sees it. A Certified Arborist credential, a TCIA accreditation, and a current certificate of insurance are the three things a careful homeowner checks before letting a saw near the house. Put the certification number on your site, in your Google profile description, and on the estimate itself. It is the single cleanest way to separate yourself from the magnet-sign competitor quoting half your price.
How do I compete with uninsured guys quoting half my number?
Do not argue about price. Change what is being compared. Give the homeowner a written estimate that names the crew size, the equipment, the debris plan, your general liability limit and your workers comp carrier, then say plainly that an uninsured crew injury on their property becomes their homeowners claim. Most people have never been told that. The pricing guide has the exact wording.
Do I need a website if my Google profile is full?
The data argues yes. Tree companies with a website carry a median of 27 reviews; those without one carry 4. 25.5% of tree services still list no site. On a $3,000 job the homeowner will look you up before calling, and there needs to be something to find that names your certification, your insurance and your service area.
What does a missed call cost a tree company?
More than in most trades, because the ticket is bigger and storm callers phone three companies in a row. At an average job of $1,100, missing 30% of 30 monthly calls and closing 40% of what you do reach, the leak runs into five figures a year. Put your own ticket and volume into the calculator.
Is crane and climbing video worth filming?
It is the best-performing content in this trade. A 30-second clip of a crane pick over a roof, or a top-down helmet shot of a takedown, gets shared in ways that a photo of a hedge never will. It sells competence without a word of copy. The Meta ads guide covers how to cut it and what to spend behind it.
How do I get municipal and HOA contracts?
Different channel entirely. Municipal work runs through posted bids and prequalification, and HOA and property-manager work is won by relationships and a certificate of insurance on file. Neither responds to Google Ads. Both respond to steady outreach, a capabilities page on your site, and being registered on the right bid portals. It is a slow build that carries you through winter.
Is the benchmark data reliable?
It is public data gathered at scale, so treat it as accurate to within a point or two, not to the decimal. Listings are deduplicated by Google place and refreshed monthly. Google does not publish this itself, which is the reason we compute it. The full method is on the about page.
Where does the benchmark data come from?
Public Google Business Profile listings found through Google Maps searches for tree services in every state. Only public business fields are kept. No reviewer names, no personal details, nothing from behind a login.
What is included in the free 14-day trial?
Any one of the services we run, or several at once: Google Ads management, Meta ads, AI search optimization, local SEO and Google Business Profile work, website design, social media, review generation, missed-call text-back and follow-up, email and SMS campaigns, bookkeeping, and cold-call appointment setting for commercial and HOA accounts. Setup, management and reporting are included. Ad spend paid to Google or Meta, if you choose to run ads, is yours.
What happens after the 14 days?
You choose. Keep the service at the monthly price quoted before the trial began, switch to a different one, or stop. Nothing renews on its own and nothing is charged during the trial itself.
Do I have to put a card down?
No. There is no card on file at any point in the trial. What we need is access to the accounts involved and about 20 minutes on a setup call.
